Friday Morning = Bittwersweet

One more day to cram everything in that we haven't seen yet! I can't believe the trip is almost over already. It is true that you can never see 100% of Rome. There is always something else, something new that you haven't seen. It all gives me plenty of reason to go back when I have a chance. We'll be headed to the Piazza del Poppolo today to see a great view of the city. The piazza is north of the spanish steps and is on top of one of the 7 hills of rome offering great views. The piazza also is home to a church that has works by Carravagio and Rafaello in their collection. This should be a great way to cap off the trip before we celebrate with dinner tonight, the "Last Supper."

Yesterday after Borghese, James, Samone, Brian, John and I went and toured Palatine Hill and the Capitoline Museums. The view from Palatine Hill is stunning, looking back on the the many domes of the city and all the Roman monuments. The museum itself contains famous sculptures of ancient Rome that you can actually get close enough to reach out and touch, there are no barriers. The museum celebrates Roman history so it also has a great collection of paintings some of which are more than 2 stories tall. We finished the night by taking Fred Gruber and Brian Crowley out to dinner on us for the help they've given us navigating around the city. Thank you guys so much because we would have been SOOOOOOOO lost in this city without your help.

Many groups are in Assisi and Florence today and we're all anxious to see how their trips went tonight when everyone will be together for one last night in the eternal city.

Villa Borghese

I had the chance today to tour the Borghese Gallery. Borghese, for those who don't know, is a gold mine for famous art from the Rennaisance as well as many statues created by famous italian artists. There are few things more exciting than seeing a room full of the most famous pieces of art in history. The gallery is not large but one famous piece after another is displayed anywhere from walls to the ceilings. Absolutely beautiful. There are few words that can accurately describe this collection of the works of Carravagio, Michelangelo, Bernini, Rafaello, and Donatello among others. The gallery is also situated in the middle of a beautiful park which many of us had the chance to walk through yesterday. These gems are a bit of a change of pace from the bustling Rome we have been seeing but they are always welcoming to the eye whether you are an artist or not.

Nick's First Post

Even with the weather feeling a lot like Pittsburgh (cold rain and grey) the Eternal City is beautiful. Today was a pretty easy going day with the tour of the tombs of St. Peter and Pope JP2 among others. Even with the rain there was so much to enjoy with a couple trips to coffee shops and other stores. The most beautiful parts of the trip for me so far have been climbing to the top of St. Peter's dome and touring the Vatican Gardens. Even in the late winter, the gardens are full of green grass and flowers in bloom. It's such a beautiful place to walk and is one of the most peaceful places in all of the city. Among all the wonderful tours I can't help but notice the color of Rome. The color that you see here is incredibly pleasing and brilliant. The colors of all the buildings perfectly complement each other and make the city look beautiful. These last 3 days have been so surreal and I can't wait for the papal audience tomorrow.

Ciao!

Last post deleted....

I lost the last long post I wrote up due to a computer error.

Here are the cliffnotes:

I DID know where I was going when guiding the detachment to the pizzeria. I just didn't take the quickest route. There was no deception intended.

Fun stuff. All is well.

More later.
Ok. To explain Aimee's post, let me just say that I went the wrong way around the Vatican. Big deal. I knew where the place was, I knew how to get there, I just didn't choose the fastest route.

As we aproached the pizzeria (one I was set on returning to when I came to Rome five years ago), these thoughts crossed my mind: It's Monday, at 3pm - there's a good chance that the place is closed, and it's been five years since I ate there, the pizzeria could very well have closed up for good since then. Needless to say I was praying pretty intensely that I'd come across the restaurant soon. I committed myself to entering the nearest open eatery and claiming that it was the actuall destination. The next place was THE place... by the Grace of God.

Today was swell. Touring the crypt of St. Peters, and seeing his relics. Pretty awesome.

More tours of Rome courtesy of Brian Crowley. Fun as ussual.

Time's running out for my computer rental, so this is all for now!

Gelato, rose wine, and O Sole Mia (pizza) + awesomest tours of all time

So today we went SO MANY PLACES!

We started off the day with quick impromptu breakfast at McDonalds... yes... they have pastries and yummy muffins and donuts at McDonalds here... no McGriddles or any American-type shenanigans. Then we ran/rode across town to the Vatican Museums, where we toured the Vatican Gardens and Museums. Within those spaces alone are enough SRZBZNS beautiful awesome rooms that I could go on for hours. Unfortunatley, I have 10 minutes left on this computer. maybe.

So... we went to see the Gardens. They were BEAUTIFUL. And from every angle you could see the dome of St. Peters! There were parrots and beautiful pathways and fountains and just so many beautiful little pieces of nature among the huge sprawling city.

Afterward, in the museum we got to see many many sarcophagi and tapestries and paintings. But the most stunning of all was easily THE SISTINE CHAPEL. I have no way to put completely into words the beauty of this space. Michelangelo transformed the potentially dull barn of a church into something that has yet to be rivaled (and which I doubt will ever be).

St. Peter's was so much more than what I expected, and I was so happy to see the Bernini Holy Spirit altar '-- most beautiful in the world, I tell you.

Also. We took a horrendously long walk ALL THE WAY AROUND the perimiter of the Vatican. Basically, some of us wanted to strangle James by the end, but out of mercy and love and charity and all that wonderful virtuous stuff that we've been praying for this whole time, we didn't.

Catherine and I went to a gelato place and look at some of the shops in the Termini after dinner today, and then ended up trying to get 'just a small pizza' and had a pizza each and rose wine. BTW, my pizza had egg on it. YES.

I have to say, I'm glad that I'm trying to fit in as much as possible from the city here, but i really feel like I haven't done as much as I could, and that I won't do as much as I should while I'm here. Oy. But it's beautiful, and such a wonderful experience.

Oh -- and in case you were wondering, the people on this trip are perfectly capable of debate.

And on a final note -- 'no humility without humiliation.'

i want a vespa... and i got to visit san clemente!

Hey all~

Man it is absolutely really surreal. Yes, I meant that in the most oxymoronic paradoxical sense that I possibly could. It is beautiful and breathtaking here, and I cannot really put into words all the things that I am feeling and taking in.

Today we got to visit St. Peter's Basilica (Catherine, Samone and I went for Mass.... in Italian), see Pope Benedict, go to St. Mary Major, St. Paul's outside the walls, St. John Lateran (dedicated to Ss. John the Evangelist and John the Baptist, which is ACTUALLY the Cathedral of Rome... cuz St. Peter's isn't!), and St. Clement's.

BTW... St. Clement's is SO AWESOME. I mean, all the churches are awesome, but I studied St. Clement's in my architectural history courses and this church is just SO. TOTALLY. AWESOME. It was built in the 12th century on the top of a 4th century Christian church (the original 1st Cathedral of Rome), which was built on top of a 1st century domus in Rome (which had a temple to the pagan god Mithras). It was so cool to see the excavations and all of the amazing stuff. Really, it is so cool and interesting to think that Rome is really this huge pile of dirt which has been built upon again and again. and again. and again.

The churches are absolutely beautiful and Liz Lev is an awesome tour guide, who definitely gives the tours with the perfect amount of Catholic history. It's super appreciated.
The prayer spaces are just beautiful and really lift my heart and spirit to God, I just wish that I had more time to spend in them!

To those back home praying for us, thank you so much for your intercession. No one's been hurt or gotten lost or anything of the sort. We're all doing quite well.

Oh. and I want a Vespa now. A little mint green one one which I can ride around and be chic. Vespas are EVERYWHERE here and its really cool to see all of the little cars. It's a different driving culture for sure. Less traffic as far as I've seen (the metro is a blessing in that case!), but many more cars parked on the side of the road.

OH. And the hostel is awesome and the hosts are amazing and give us coupons for free or really super discounted stuff quite a bit! It's clean and well taken care of and it's been a really great experience here. I'm glad that I chose the one I did -- I think it was a good decision and it's just been great.

Some people are out now at a Pittsburgh-themed bar here in the city, having a good time, but I will be going up to bed now so I send my love back to the States! God Bless and goodnight.

Rome!

We made it!

Our first night in Rome is drawing closer and closer to an end, as most of us prepare for bed after a very long, but very fun day.

My best friend, Brian Crowley, now an archecture student at Catholic University, is spending this semester studying in Rome. He was able to meet 10 of us tonight and act as a guide. Brian brought us to a spectacular little known restaurant in downtown Rome, explained and demonstrated proper use of the public transportation system, and suggested a large weekly market to visit tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, PJ Gruber's eldest(?) brother Fred (a seminarian at the North American College at the Gregorian in Rome) showed the first Rome arrivals around the city.

Tomorrow morning it's Mass (at St. Peter's for me and about half the group, and St. Mary's for the rest. Tour of the Vatican Garden guided by Liz Lev will follow.

It's nearly 1:30, and I've got to soon retire if I'm to accomplish anything at all tomorrow. It's time now to say hello to my hostel bunk bed.

A Quick Update

Point of information: Wi-fi in heathrow in London works just fine, thankfully.

Half of the group has just left London for Rome. The second half should be in the air by 2pm.

The four of us who stayed last night in Baltimore's Inner Harbor (Nick, Joanna, Michelle, and myself) encountered no blood stains. Highlights of the rest stop included: a visit to the National Aquarium, a walk through of the USS Tursk (a WWII era submarine), and a walk in and around the ballpark at Camden Yard.

One hour until boarding....

a whimsical flight out into the night

So i'm sitting here in the terminal, sitting at the gate, waiting for the plane. Our first group has left Dulles and our second group is waiting, likely boarding in Baltimore. And our last faithful group is chilling at gate B44 in the Dulles airport - drinking coffee (Emily), reading Eclipse (Kelly), talking with significant others (CatRod), and trying in some vain attempt to stay awake even though my body is calling me (very loudly so) to sleep.

Part of me just can't believe this is happening -- and despite the tough things in the last 24 hours, I am so incredibly excited that I get to visit Italy... Rome... so soon!

So here's a quick recap~

our group of 5 left from Oakland at 4:45ish... we finally got out of the greater Pittsburgh area by about 6:15 PM. Basically, TRAFFIC IN PITTSBURGH SUCKS. On the other hand, we had some good bonding time and learned that for the most part, John is a great driver and makes good time. We also learned that 5 people in one car who had barely eaten all day WILL stop to eat at a Cracker Barrell at 9:10PM and be THOSE PEOPLE in the restaurant. Also -- it takes me a solid hour to 90 minutes to finish a meal /takes out triangle golf tee game and tries to solve again before taking another bite/ *OMNOM* The food was SO GOOD though. And Catherine will buy me little 99-cent egg-shaped salt and pepper shakers for my wedding gift someday. :D
We finally got into Maryland (in an area that I felt ALL TOO FAMILIAR with due to my getting lost in the DC area for the March for Life events in January) and pulled up to the motel. A police car followed us into the lot and when we went into the office to get our room keys, we noticed that the reception area was enclosed by bulletproof glass. Yes, 2-inch thick bulletproof glass. That was our first sign that perhaps this area was a bit sketchier than we had hoped.
So me and Catherine went up to our room and lo-and-behold, there are bloodstains on the carpet (SMOOTH CRIMINAL) and on the chair in the corner. SO SKETCH. I was freaking out, almost crying,.... okay, that's a lie. I was definitely crying. So we left and John took us to the theater to see Alice In Wonderland. First impression - very good, very simple movie. In that respect, it's very Tim Burton. In another, the sheer beauty of the world that he created - was classic Burton and i LOVED that. I would recommend seeing it on the big screen while you have the chance. :)

ALSO - please pray for Chad's mom who was going to come with us. She fell at the Oratory yesterday and got hurt and now will not be able to join us on the trip. :(
Please pray for her quick recovery and peace of mind. :)

Oh -- last thing. PLEASE PRAY FOR US!
We all have intentions that we're taking with us so please just say a quick prayer that we grow and learn much about ourselves and God's will in our lives.

I love you all~!

Ciao!

Stay Tuned!

As most of our cell phones won't work overseas, I thought it a good idea to begin a blog to keep our friends and family up on our pilgrimage.

I hope my peers will update this blog often, perhaps a few posts each day, so check back often!

24 hours from now, we'll all be over the Atlantic Ocean....
